Hi Don!
I must have had a lucky youth.
Among my peers Heep was definitley the number 1 - (I'm talking about a
time about 75 to 77) - followed by Purple. Sabbath and Zeppelin were
well respected too, but I think Rainbow and Status Quo were even between
theses two and Heep / Purple.
The late 70s brought a change. Heep and Quo lost a lot of reputation
because of the pop appeal of their releases. (Purple and Zep took "the
easy road". They split and called it a day.) In the case of Heep
Innocent Victim and Fallen Angel had been the reason why.
Escpecially the singles.Most friends didn't noticed songs like
"Free'n'easy" one of the hardest Heep tracks by then or the great ballad
"Illusion" at all.
... and the mighty Heep is the only one of the Hard Rock Pionieers who
makes the 50th anniversary without any split or break. They are really
50!! Big up!
