Subject: [Heeplist] NY Show Feb 22

I never wrote my tale of the show, I apologize for that. It was the day
after the PA show and I spent a good part of the day driving back to NJ to
meet some Heep fans JC and Bryan at the train station. How odd is the
weather in the northeast. On Wednesday the 21st it hit 70 degrees F and was
sunny. The next day, the high was 38 for the day, it was miserable, cold and
rainy.

We took the train into NY and arrived in the city about 3:30 Pm. We later
found out, doors did not open until 7 and show was not until 9 pm. We made
our way to the venue, via NY taxi and were there by 4. We waited out front.
JC had a pile of cds for the band to sign, and Brian had a few things as
well. Me, I don¹t ask for signatures, however I still treasure the picture
of me falling asleep at HV 2000 and Pete Wharton had it signed by the band.
Anyhow after an hour wait, we finally did catch each individual band member.
Bernie said he was sick, and just kept walking. When Phil came out, he had
a tablet and was filming the city skyline. I thought to myself, hmm, maybe
a video for the next Pledge piece?? JC got Phil to sign some stuff, and he
used the ³A² word that Phil does not like. I pointed it out and it made
Phil laugh. Lol! After Brian and JC got stuff signed, Brian and I went to
dinner. We went to a nice pub, and Davey and Phil were there. We didn¹t
bother them though, sometimes it is good to respect their privacy and not
act like a fan. I try to have the attitude that they should feel special
for meeting me, lol!

Around 6, I felt much warmer and had a nice meal and some brews, Brian I
went back to the venue, and JC was online. The line was long, but we were
able to pay $20 more and get some sort of upgrade and when the doors opened,
we got to sit in a section right by stage, that had some bar type tables and
stools. We were literally even with the stage and about 15 feet from Mick,
this was better than standing in front of the stage and looking up.

Finally at 9 on the dot, Heep came on. It was the same setlist as night
before, and played with as much energy and enthusiasm. I was impressed,
because since I saw them last 3 years ago, they seem to have gotten better,
play looser and with more feelings. Davey moves all around the stage with
confidence, Russell still beats the drums senseless, but he seems to be
smoother at it now. Phil has really come out of his shell over the last 20
years, he moves a lot makes a lot of hand motions and plays with more
passion.

One difference between the shows, while the setlist may be scripted, Bernie
isn¹t. At the NY show, he rambled for several minutes before MB about the
70¹s. He kept saying ³you know what I am talking about². I actually
didn¹t, but assumed he meant drug usage? He also got it right at NY about
Between Two Worlds being off of Sonic Origami, not Different World as he
said the night before.

Some highlights of the set for me where Look at Yourself. I like how Davey
goes across the stage to mick, and they both solo their respective guitars.
Then Bernie goes over and does some guitar note duels with his voice. I
remember in the 70¹s Edgar Winter doing that to a great degree. MB was a
highlight, Mick and Russ are powerful on that guitar drum extended duet, and
I get shivers everytime I hear it. I also like how Phil has taken over the
vocal interplay at the end of the song, singing the parts Lee used to sing.

Shadows of Grief is an amazing song, and they really pull it off great
live!! I love it when they dust off a song from the vaults. I am not
certain if they have ever done this song live, since the LAY tour in 1972 or
if they did it then. Between Two Worlds has become one of their Classics
and I can¹t get enough of it.

I loved the spot where we were sitting the view of the stage and the sound
was spot on. We had an old guy at our table, he looked 70 (I am still 9
years away) and he never said a word. He just smiled and drank beer after
beer. We did have a smelly bearded tatooed, overly pierced guy invade our
space, and he was convulsing all around us, very aggravating. However, I
tried to ignore him best I could.

It was a great show, but when done, we had to bolt to catch a cab and a
train. By then it was 10:40 and the train was for 11:06. If we missed that
one we would have to wait another hour. So we left the venue, and jumped
right into a cab. I though wow, we are going to make it!! Then a half
block later, as we kept hearing a funny noise, the cab had a flat tire. We
jumped out and luckily got another one with in a minute or two and made the
train. The ride back to NJ was really special as the three of us bubbled
effervescently over our experiences of the evening. These are once in a
lifetime moments and you have to make the most of them!!!
