Hi Don,
Please, resend my questionnaire to the list - let's see what others think.
Thank you.
As for me, I take it you've interpreted my questions in a rather cunning
way, but I understand what you mean. In other words, the way UH turned to
be after 1982 satisfies you completely and you see it as quite a "logical
progression" :) OK, I don't agree, but really there's no point disputing
over it any further. They are what they are (and I am more than sure they
got what they deserved).
P.S. Heep were a typical rock band of the early 70-s so when the era came
to its end, sadly it was over for that band as well no matter who blames
who for multiple failures. On the other hand, Kansas had even two keyboard
players on stage which wasn't really an obstacle for them by the end of
that era and a bit later. So, it ain't a matter of sound or instruments,
more of what is considered fab and is in demand.
Cheers, Igor

Hi Igor,
Is see you brought out the big beating stick out of the closet . You
Meany!! lol :)))

Look all I know is, the way of fantasy style music, organ and moog synth
was losing popularity.
Was there still lots of synth utilized in the Late 70's and eighty's. Sure,
but bands that survived, like Pink Floyd were masters in utilizing
keyboards, synthesizers , because they used the sounds as beatification not
as a main driving force.

Rush used synth fill-ins and used the sound strategicly, power drumming,
vocals, bass and guitar was the main driving force.
So, Heep needed to make a decision.
Life without Hensley, could they survive?let's see .
Heep had a world class drummer/ singer/ songwriter. ( just ask Ozzie!)
Heep had a world class melodic power bass player/ singer/ songwriter,
Heep had a world class singer, probably one of the best singers in rock n
roll and was a song writer,
Heep had a world class guitar player/ singer/ songwriter.

Fast forward to Outsider.
Main driving force. power drumming, guitar, vocals, bass and organ, which
is blended in nicely.
Finally the producer and sound engineers got it right, brought out Mick
on the levels.
Cheers,
Don

Don,
Having read your opinion, I have several questions for you now. It is not a
matter of agree or disagree but more about the actual state of things. So
here they are, my mean questions.
#1. If you like the Outsider so much, what took away Box' band from shining
for some 34 years? Or was it all glorious and as entertaining as it was
with Ken?
#2. Did I get it right you mean that only with Gary Heep were magical
whereas with other bass players of the 70-s (Newton, Wetton, Bolder) they
were not?
#3.Don't you think Ken's performance (and sound) was probably the most
important - albeit not the only one, of course - ingredient in 70-s Heep?
#4. Probably you've heard David's 1975 record, Take No Prisoners. Yes, came
out right after the LP you've mentioned, after which you would want Ken and
the rest of the band to part. Do you know this actually might have been a
new band featuring all the Heep members minus Hensley? Do you think you (or
general public) would've praised such a change?
#5 What magical step of Mr.Box (or any other band member) could've
propelled the band forward if they neither ever really had a backing of a
major label (like Floyd or Purple, or Iron Maiden) nor were as popular or
loved as the "Premier league" bands like LZ or Queen?
#6 Don't you acknowledge that simple fact that from Return To Fantasy
through Conquest Heep were quite successful, at least from the musical
point of view? P.S. Do you know of the enormous commercial success they had
with RTF?
#7. Do you really believe Mick Box was oppressed in the 70-s by Bron and
Hensley? Where are his ideas, if not songs, from that age then? :)))
#8.Don't you think they just went out of fashion in the second part of the
70-s no matter how good the songs were?
I believe, if you (and maybe others, too) answer these questions, we might
have dotted the i's and crossed the t's in the topic of "Who's who in UH?"
Cheers, Igor

Hi guys,
Regarding Ken, I don't have any problems with Ken, he was a good
songwriter, versatile
Musician. His songwriting did give Heep their identity,
Was he the best performer in Heep. No.
Was his song writing enough to put them on top. No.
In my opinion David Byron and Gary Thain turned his lyrics and music into
magic.

I can't blame anyone in particular for the bad marriage, but in my opinion
it's too bad the divorce didn't happen after Wonderworld for everyone sake
.
In my opinion the song writing and lack of enthusiasm wasn't there.
I'm sure everyone can say there is a few songs here and there that shined,
but not enough to propel them forward.
The songs were just getting too soft and Kens synth work was a killer.
The only complaint I have is Ken and Bron controlling the sound board and
not letting Box shine,
This is why I enjoy Outsider so much . I've been waiting for that many
years!!
Cheers,
Don
