[Heeplist] Byron - a rock'n'roller who stepped down

 Hello Don,
No, "technically" you are not wrong, and that is what all of them say: he was fired. But listen to that Tetley's interview carefully - and you'll have doubts whether it was exactly like they (Hensley, Box, Bron, Kerslake) tend to interpret and thus make us believe that was the WHOLE truth. Also from their interviews you might come to a conclusion that David was a drunkard by 1976. Since I've read the "Born To Perform" and some Byron's interviews, I am of a little bit different opinion: he drank sometimes, perhaps on purpose because a) he no longer enjoyed singing for Uriah Heep, hence got high in a slightly different manner; b) he was tired of the Bron organisation c) had he expressed desire to leave of his own accord, he wouldn't  have had the compensation, and I believe that really mattered for him. Do you really believe Heep wanted to get rid of Byron or planned that? No, but the fact of the matter was that after Gerry was in a way kicked in the boot (and they decided to produce 1976 LP by themselves), the band were no longer having that financial (promotional) support which they had through 1975. And David, having realised that it is generally done with the band's ambitions, no longer cared... If you read Mr.Perkins' book or, for instance, the 1976 interview "Why I Fell From Uriah Heep" (Sounds, July the 17-th, 1976), probably you'll have plenty of things to reconsider, especially about who and what kind of man was David Byron. Good luck!
Cheers, Igor

Of course, by then Byron still hoped to get a proper solo carreer and still thought it was a good decision to LEAVE Heep - I am sure he was fired only techically and the choice to leave was entirely his. That is why he also declined Box's offfer in 1981. But the problem was that the big music wirld wasn't really interested in any other kind of Byron than the one of Uriah Heep. And that killed him in the end, I believe.
