[Heeplist] 'Historical Content' or a Cover?

Agree with Igor and after a year plus of not posting, his comments drew me in! Especially with a US Tour on the horizon.
Heep plays what I would call the "Historical Content" out of necessity in some countries (try not ending a set with 'Lady In Black' in Germany and there's bound to be a riot) out of tradition in others, and out of a perceived 'what they would probably like to hear' in yet others.

As far as the US is concerned, especially for the majority of folks who might show up at a Heep Show now, you'd have them covered with Stealin', and Easy Livin,' two songs that are still a mainstay to every classic rock station across the US. And then the set list could be totally open! This would be ideal for the hardcore of us who are hoping for new and rarely played gems...Dreammare, Sea of Light, Footprints in the Snow, Hanging Tree, etc.

The UK would have a completely different story and would likely include what most of us would feel to be the real 'heart' of the band's content...July Morning and the more enduring classics.

Unfortunately, the set list is still, for Heep, a concensus or a global 'best of' plus the new ones tossed in. That does not for a moment categorize Heep as an oldies cover band yet I can understand the lament of list members who are likely to see every show within driving or flying distance.

I can do with giving Free & Easy a break but would not want to see Rainbow Demon removed...and that's just my own selfish wish. I' can hear multiple list members growning.

I think what I'd like to see is Heep have a rotation of songs that could be interchanged. Not Greatful Dead like sets that change in their entirety on a nightly basis but a group of songs that might change from show to show.

The band would probably be energized by 'calling an audible' (US Football reference) and changing the play list on the fly. At this point in their career they should not be worried about the risk of working on the fly...they have earned that right and their audience would find it downright energizing!

Just my Point of View!
What do others think?

Thanks so much for that very worthwhile explanation Igor. I for one do appreciate it!

Bob,
I respect any opinion, but see it myself from quite a different angle: Phil Lanzon, Bernie Shaw, Russel Gilbrook, Davey Rimmer plus Mick Box mostly play the songs, initially written and performed live by Hensley, Byron, Box etc.. - I intentionally, on purpose, name the former band members in the order of their contribution to the music of classic Heep. The only similarity between the bands is the name plus the figure of lead guitarist, who is, of course, still great and perhaps even better than ever... but we all know it ain't enough to even come close to "that" Heep from all points of view. And I wouldn't compare the two: this band, as I stated many times before, has its own unique style; it shines, regarding studio work, on the modern rock skies no worse than the legend did in the 70-s. But when it comes to live concerts, modern Heep, - perhaps, not intentionally but still it's a fact - competes with that band playing live the likes of Gypsy, July Morning etc. and, in my eyes loses in almost every way. Having Lee and Trevor it was a bit different 'cause they knew better how to play Heep music properly. Having Mr. Lawton on stage made it even better - John is the singer, I tell ya' :))) Having said that, I still enjoy the Outsider and would love to see it played live in all it entirety while most of the classics should be left out for they truly do not belong to this band and in their "reading" the songs are nothing but covers really.
Cheers, Igor
