if you read my interview with Lee at Universal Wheels, Lee makes it pretty clear it was his decision for health reasons.

 The story behind is rather controversial, but that is not my
 secret.  I doubt it was Lee's intention, but when
 someone can't keep up with the band's touring
 schedule this seems the right thing to do.
