 Don,
I am sure they were - and anywhere throughout real Heep's existence when you see song credits starting with (Box/...) that means the idea (the intro, the riff, whatever of the kind) was his... With other bands it must be a bit different due to a different nature of their music based not (mostly) on the melodic or poetic idea but on the result of jamming. I believe, modern Uriah Heep is more like those classic rock bands and quite unlike "that" (classic) Uriah Heep. However, I am sure the band of glory days also had their "jam numbers" - i.e. Love Machine, Real Turned On... but that is only my guess, it is as good as yours.
