This impression it was Hensley that did everything in the early days is a bit exaggerated I feel.
On the first album it was Mick Box and David Byron that wrote most of the material, and all the albums up to Sweet Freedom Mick was involved in at least two songs on each album. Wonderworld he was more or less involved in all songs except one or two. Same with Return to fantasy, it was not until the Lawton era that Hensley wrote almost everything by himself.

I like Heep hard rockin!
Maybe Mick wasn't a Song writer back then, but he played a mean guitar!
They would have captured more of the North American market with heavy guitar riffs.
