 Hello, Martin,
That is true but only for Heep, with Hartley he never stood out, just played solidly. As I said earlier, his was a different band with more melodic approach to songs - which were, as you said, sublime themselves. Plus, modern recording technologies make bassists sound significantly less definite (for the customer) - at least, 16 bit/44,1 kHz CD resolution surely kills a lot of bass lines details in the first place.
