I'm sorry to hear of your trouble Claudia, very sad to hear when good people 
are taken advantage of.

There are good and bad people in every country on this planet. When 
traveling in any country I believe that you must be aware of everything 
around you at all times. The locals will know who the tourists are and there 
will always be thieves trying to take advantage of you if you allow them to 
do so.
