Bet starting point is the Eagle Has Landed - a live album with many of their classic tracks on.

Their classic period would be from album 2 Wheels of Steel through to album 5 a run incorporating Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and Leather, Power and the Glory, Crusader.

If you find nothing on there that moves you then Saxon aren't for you.

I think your summary as run of the mill metal is in one sense fair but in another harsh in that they were one of the early bands that set the template that has been copied by many others.  Listening to them for the first time now you are possibly feeling you have heard it all before.

There are certainly none of the proggier elements that keep Heep interesting.

With upcoming US tour and dates to be officially announced Jan 6 as well as my speculation of dates in Florida, I decided to check out Saxon. Yes I have heard of them but never really heard them. As far as I know, I've never heard one of their songs on a US radio station. So the last few days I've been on Amazon Music I listen to denim and leather and then the greatest hits.  So far it sounds like, just run of the mill's metal with no magic like Heep provides. 

So do they have any big songs like Gypsy or July morning?  Those of you who know them what are your impressions and favorite tunes they do have a lot of recorded material and I just want to know which direction to listen to.
