If you check out Fender`s homepage you will see the difference between a Jazz and a Precision bass. They are very much alike but the Precision has a more square body.  Gary Thain I only seen with Jazz`s.. Trevor Bolder and John Wetton I think used mostly Precision ones.  But there is also several different versions of these models also, standard and pro and so on.. You see there is different pickups etc.   If You don't play professional don't buy the expensive ones is my advice though, its no point :)

The Fender Precision/Jazz basses look near identical to me. I believe the Precision was the first electrical bass they designed and by the 1960s it had the familiar look that we see Gary pictured with.
