It would be only fair to mention that the entire classic band played in their own collective style - and that was Uriah Heep to most of us. Ken's style? Well, techinically that'd be his solo works - and in the 70-s they were rather ballade oriented, much less rock'n'rolling  and dynamics than the band's general vein or style, whatever you call that. In the 80-s there was no Ken's music at all whereas the rest of that classic Heep produced AOR which was vaguely reminiscent of what they did with Ken. So, the best line-ups of Uriah Heep really depended on all the key members, and I am of that opinion there were always 5 of them no matter who brought this melody or that line or riff. :)))
Cheers, Igor
P.S. When today's Heep transform Mick's guitar phrase into a song it certainly has no less in common with the classic songs than when Ken and his bandmates record his songs, and the rest really depends on what you value in music in general and particularly in Heep's music. And no, David, I can not agree with what you've said regarding modern bands. Ken has a quality band (I don't like it as much but must admit it) which doesn't compete with UH of today not because they are worse as players (singers); they are not worse. They are all, including 80% of modern Heep, just NOT CLASSIC. Modern hard rock with a slight touch of the 70-s. Having 60% of the veterans on stage (Heep 1983-2006) made it slightly different for the ones who can distinguish the picking, singing or drumming techniques. But for those who value that very Hammond sound above all, of course, there'd be only Ken which, in addition to that, still uses some chord progressions similar to his own of the 70-s.

>Well, yes Ken has never had the musicians Heep has which is a bit of a problem, but he has the style of the classic Heep sound which still flows through his playing, Lee also had that style and I think they would still be great together in a band. Though I have never seen classic Heep as Ken or Micks band the fact is they did play more to Kens style than anyone else's. DS

>> I am sure I must, as we say in Russia, insert my 5 copecks here :)))) Of course, with Lee and Trevor they were never the band of the 70-s but no one would dare to say those two didn't make a classic rhythm section - the one that fitted both in the 70-s and the 80-s - early 90-s. Did Ken ever had musicians of such vintage quality in his band? Do Heep have now? Sum up 2 and 2 - and you will get the obvious answer: those are both modern bands; each of them now can boast having one of the original Heep musicians. And with some closeness to the original which is proportional to the original input :P))))

>>>Well, this line up even with Lee never sounded like the classic line up, but Lee did slow them down enough to be closer to the classic feel, but without him they do play faster and harder, and with Davy they seem to sound ever harder live, which is fine by me, I still say Ken playing live is way closer to that classic Heep sound. I go in knowing that and have always liked the way they are, so I'm fine with it, because there was only one classic Heep era and it ended when David left, and to a large degree when Gary left. Though I consider the first three Heep albums and the last two with Wetton to be a part of the classic era, for me the truly classic line up was from Demons and Wizards through Wonderworld. DS
