 Hello Mac,
John is always special, I love whatever he sings, but there is a difference between magical and special, at least for me. To me Heep's magic has more to do with Ken (as part of the Heep, not as a travelling bard with an acoustic guitar or synthesizer), than with anyone else from that line-up. The MBP, on the contrary, was made as an event where Mick Box's band had him (along with John Lawton) as their guest - and even this fact alone ruins any magic for me.
