I have all Heep albums up to Equator on Japanese pressings. Some of them were releases 3-4 times, early 70s, mid 70s, late 70s, early 80s. The early 70's are the better sounding ones. 
I didn't really made scientific comparisons between different pressings, it's just a general impression on the ones I listened to. 
I did once a sound comparison with two friends, on Firefly, UK, US, German and Japanese pressings, and the first remastered CD. The UK one sounded the best (the widest dynamics despite the fact that it's the copy I bought in 77 and is very well used), with the US one quite close to it. Guess what was the worst, the remastered CD, absolutely crappy dynamics. BTW, we started with the CD, and then played the UK LP. We were left with jaws open when heard the LP in comparison to the CD.
And 45's always have better sound. I think it has something to do with the speed and the mastering.
