Hi there rockers,
I've found another meaning for that!

According to my Dictionary App, in London 'punter' can be used as a synonym of scalper, and one definition of scalper is:

"5. A person who buys tickets for entertainment or sports events and sells them at a profit, often at a much higher price. Also, ticket scalper."

Cheers!

Claudia

A gambling man is another meaning, Bob. Commonly also used to refer to
people who hand their money over for something they are going to get,
generally in the future. So if you like they are like a gambler in that they
have handed over money for something they might not get (for example, the
gig gets cancelled, a company goes bust). It does tend to have a very
demeaning overtone to it particularly when used by the potential providers.
Consider the nuance of a band talking about the "fans" at a gig and the
"punters" at a gig. Fans is good, punters is condescending.

Hope that helps,

Pete

Of course Russia had the bigger crowd!!

I have been wanting to ask this for awhile, what exactly is a punter?
When you say punter, I immediately think of someone in National Football
League in the USA who kicks the ball on Fourth Down after his team failed to
get another first down. The punter has the ball snapped to him and he kicks
it downfield to the opposing team with the intent of driving it as far
downfield as he can, so as to put the opposing team at a disadvantage. A
punter is a very special and talented player. The only time they are not
held in high regard is when the opposing team blocks the punt and gets the
ball at a spot on the field close to the goal line. So if there are
2000-2500 all in one spot, the NFL should have scouts there. Good punters
are hard to find!
