> Hi allA fantastic show last night with the inclusion of 5 tracks from Now What?! Surprise of the night was Apres Vous kicking off the set instead of the usual Highway Star which for the first time in my memory was omitted completely! The whole set list was (I hope the pasting and links work?!);Après Vous (World premiere: First time ever)Into the Fire Hard Lovin' Man Vincent Price Strange Kind of Woman Contact Lost Guitar Solo (by Steve Morse)Uncommon Man The Well-Dressed Guitar The Mule (incl. Drum Solo by Ian Paice)Above and Beyond Lazy Hell to Pay Keyboard Solo (by Don Airey)Perfect Strangers Space Truckin' Smoke on the Water Encore:Green Onions (Booker T. & The MG’s cover)Hush (Billy Joe Royal cover)Bass Solo (by Roger Glover)Black Night Ian Gillan's voice was ok and he particularly pushed it during Into the Fire and Strange kind of Woman. Steve Morse and Don Airey were the stars for me with amazing solo spots. Ian Paice did an excellent solo during the "Mole" (The Mule) as introduced by Gillan as a small furry animal with lots of underground connections! The lights went off completely and Paicey had sticks with lights (or lasers?) on the end so that you could follow them during the solo which was very effective and novel. Jon Lord was given special mention before both Above and Beyond (dedicated to him) and Perfect Strangers with his pictures shown on the back drop throughout the songs.Certainly the new songs fitted in well (IG kept having to refer to a lyric sheet during them!) and it shows the confidence they have in them by kicking off with Apres Vous. They all looked like they were enjoying being back in the UK and having a capacity crowd (3500) who were well up for it. The Apollo is by far the best venue in Manchester for atmosphere and sound. Last time I saw DP they were at the Arena with the orchestra which was also excellent but not as intimate. There is no other band I know who have the musical prowess and virtuosity of Purple and I hope to be able to see them many more times in the future. If you get a chance go to see them!I love Heep since I first saw them on the Return to Fantasy Tour in December 1975 and they will always be my favourite band but Purple take some beating! Now What?!
